How to write a resolution

Develop a shared proposal with clear responsibilities and next steps.

A path from debate and resolution to connection, action and reflection on impact
From a shared idea to a thoughtful next step.

Start with the problem

Agree what the proposal aims to address. Identify the committee’s mandate and the evidence that supports the need for action.

Draft together

Invite different delegations to contribute. Explain the background, then set out the actions being proposed. Follow the conference’s required resolution format and terminology.

Make actions understandable

Ask who would do what, how it could work and what support it would require. Consider feasibility and the concerns of delegates who may not yet agree.

Revise through dialogue

Read the draft aloud and look for ambiguity or repetition. Use feedback to improve it. Check the committee’s procedure for submitting, amending and considering a draft resolution.

There is a place for you at the table.
