Research begins with a question · Editorial illustration

Begin with your committee

Read the announced committee guide and the conference’s own instructions. Identify the topic, the body being simulated and any document or procedure requirements. Formats differ between conferences.

Research with a purpose

Make notes under three headings: the issue, your assigned country or perspective, and possible responses. Keep a record of where each fact came from. Look for points of agreement as well as differences.

Practise a clear contribution

Prepare a short explanation of your position: what matters, why it matters and what you propose. Practise aloud. Ask a classmate which point was clear and which needs more explanation.

Bring questions, not only answers

Make a list of questions you want to ask other delegates. Review the published procedure and practical arrangements. Preparation should help you participate confidently while staying open to new information.
